Anti-Virus Errors / "Encrypted connection detected"
Encrypted email cannot be scanned by a third party (such as Norton Antivirus):
That means email scanning may need to be disabled in your anti-virus program. You will still be protected from viruses because Whidbey Telecom will scan for them.
When connected to another ISP
Secure Email allows you to safely send and receive messages even when connected to a different Internet Service Provider. However, some providers may not support using Secure Email through their network.
The symptoms would be errors such as "Cannot connect to mail.whidbey.net", or timeouts.
In that case, it may be necessary to use our Webmail instead, or ask your ISP to support encrypted email on port 587 and 465 through their network.
Wave Cable customers should call 1-866-WAVE-123 for assistance un-blocking port 587 and 465 in the cable modem firewall.
Certificate Errors
If you receive an error when using Secure Email, there are several possible issues:
Your mail servers may not be set to mail.whidbey.net
You may have accidently setup Secure Email on an account with another provider.
Your email program requires an update to support Secure Email.
Please re-visit the Secure Email page for your program, and follow the steps to check your settings.
Is your Operating System or Email Program not listed?
Any email client released since 2001 should support Secure Email. If your program is not listed on our support pages, it may be outdated or is not commonly encountered.
We recommend the Thunderbird email client. It's free, and available on any operating system:
