Sending Email on Port 25

This page applies to those using a third-party ISP, or those operating email servers.


  1. What is "port 25"?
    Port 25 is used by an email program to send email.
    It is also used between Internet Service Providers to exchange email.
  2. Why do ISPs block port 25?
    Spammers infect home computers with viruses which send spam using Port 25. By blocking port 25 it reduces spam.
  3. Does Whidbey Telecom block port 25?
    Yes, Port 25 is blocked by all ISPs who are concerned about spam.
  4. As a Whidbey Telecom DSL or dial-up customer, how does this effect me?
    You cannot send email if you use Port 25 with another provider.
    Instead, port 587 or 465 must be used.

    Customers with a static IP address can be given access to operate email servers by calling 360-321-8324.

  5. I have email with another provider, what can I do?
    Please contact your email provider for information sending email using port 587 or 465.
  6. Can I use Whidbey Telecom for email, but another ISP for Internet access?
