In 1908, farmers and business owners on south Whidbey Island banded together to create a telephone company. Whidby Telephone Company was incorporated in Langley in 1908. Now known as Whidbey Telecom, our company has been providing local telephone services for more than 100 years. Throughout, Whidbey Telecom has contributed to the stability of our local area through philanthropy and personalized customer care while providing leading-edge technologies and innovative services to our customers.
In 1953, David C. Henny purchased controlling interest in Whidbey Telephone Company. By 1961, we had become the first local telephone company in the nation to bury 100% of our local lines. This investment continues to yield reliability for customers and decreased impact on the scenic beauty of our communities.
In 1994, Whidbey Telephone Company became the first local independent telephone company west of the Rocky Mountains to offer internet services. Today, Whidbey Telecom Internet & Broadband is the leading provider of Internet-related services in our area. Over the years, we’ve continued adding network upgrades and enhancements. In 2000, we began offering high-speed Internet. By 2002, customers throughout both the South Whidbey and Point Roberts service areas had access to broadband, an accomplishment that many large telecommunication companies were not able to achieve until much later. Our high-speed Internet services continue to improve and increase in performance as we pursue and embrace advances in technology.
As we entered the new millennium, the tradition of progress continued. Between the years 2000 and 2002 alone, we launched three new businesses to serve our customers: Whidbey Telecom Long Distance, Whidbey Telecom Security & Alarms and Data Center Services business. Each of these groups share the Whidbey Telecom commitment to deliver leading-edge solutions to our customers and reflects the highest level of customer service and quality with value.
In 2003, our Internet services were further complemented with the addition of Wi-Fi "Hot Spots" and new High-Speed Internet offerings. Both additions enabled the company to pursue even more modern solutions by anticipating our customer's needs. Our success is based on anticipating and responding to the needs of our customers.
In 2004, we decided to move the branding of Whidbey Telephone Company in a new direction. We replaced our long-standing logo with a more contemporary design and brought the various business divisions under the umbrella of "Whidbey Telecom."
In 2011, we opened our new offices and our Customer Experience Center in Freeland, Wash. The center includes the WiFire Coffee Shop, a retail technology store, a customer service center, and a community conference room. In-step with our long-standing community ethos, it was completed and furnished almost entirely with the help of local construction companies, design firms, craftsmen and artists.
Whidbey Telecom’s latest innovation, WhidbeyTV, was launched in the Fall of 2013. It combines high quality, high value entertainment services with our concierge-level of support. From free High Definition programming, to features like “whole home” DVR and fast channel change, to extended viewing options through mobile devices and On Demand content, WhidbeyTV delivers innovation and value. Our belief in building strong communities also led to the development of a local channel that exclusively airs locally-focused programming. WhidbeyTV Local Channel 1 helps our customers connect with local programs and businesses, explore the island, learn from local experts, and share their stories.
