South Whidbey pilot combines practical technology education, online safety training, and intergenerational engagement.
Langley, WA – Whidbey Telecom and Island Senior Resources (ISR) launched a yearlong pilot in July of 2026, to help South Whidbey seniors strengthen their digital skills, improve awareness of online threats, and use internet-based services with greater confidence. The initiative offers hands-on workshops, live demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, mentoring, and community events. Planned topics include online privacy, password security, scam and phishing recognition, communication applications, telehealth services, and streaming technology.
This partnership is intended to address two related needs: accessible, personalized technology guidance for older adults, and structured development opportunities for Whidbey Telecom employees.
“We’re excited for this partnership and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our elder population,” says Jody Jeffers, Program Manager at Whidbey Telecom. “We’re bringing employees and local seniors together to exchange knowledge, build confidence with technology, and create genuine connections.”
“We hope these events give more seniors a reason to visit our senior center in Bayview, meet new people, participate in activities, and stay for a nourishing meal,” says Emelia Harris, community engagement manager at Island Senior Resources. ISR expressed a need for increased participation in and awareness of its meal programs, which is one of the long-term goals of this partnership.
The program kicked off in July with a rotation of three different events:
- Lunch & Learn Tech Talk: After enjoying lunch at the ISR Bayview Center, seniors received training on a breadth of topics: “How to Protect Yourself Against Phishing Scams” in July, followed by “The Scoop on Speed” in August, and finally “Fiber Installs Frequently Asked Questions” in October. Future Tech Talks are scheduled for the 3rd Monday of every month at 12:30pm, right after lunch.
- Lunch & Learn Tech Time: One on one, face-to-face technical support. Seniors can bring their devices and sit with an expert who will listen, troubleshoot, and work through issues one-on-one. It’s technical support with a personal touch. Tech Times are scheduled for the 1st Monday of every month at 12:30pm, right after lunch.
- Classic Connections: Cross-generational event that brings everyone together to enjoy a classic movie, learn from technology demonstrations, and make real connections. Future Classic Connections are scheduled every month.
“I’m thrilled we’ve been able to participate!” says Harris, of the Classic Connections event. “Showing a movie is a great way to bring people together.”
“This partnership is about people helping people,” Jeffers notes. “If these programs help someone feel more confident with technology, make a new connection, share a laugh, or discover a great meal at Bayview, that’s something worth celebrating,” said Jeffers.
